The Chicago Bulls were looking to move Rajon Rondo, but it looks like they couldn’t find a partner. The Bulls announced that they released Rondo.

The Chicago Bulls were going into “Philadelphia 76ers-esque” tank mode as soon as they shipped off Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves. They could never make it work between Butler and Hoiberg and they decided to part ways. In the deal for Butler, the Bulls got Kris Dunn, who would in turn be the point guard of their future.

As soon as Dunn became a member of the Bulls, the writing was on the wall that Rajon Rondo will be heading out of town. The Bulls’ front office was trying to trade Rondo the past few days, but they weren’t able to find a taker.

As a result, they decided that it wasn’t worth to keep Rondo at his current salary, so they released the point guard, making him a free agent now.

The deadline to make Rondo’s salary fully guaranteed was today. That salary amount was $13 million and the Bulls decided that in a rebuilding year, which wasn’t worth it to keep the point guard at that salary.

Although they released him, the Bulls are still set to give Rondo $3 million, but that’s far less than what they would’ve owed him on the team. They have younger point guards that they would like to keep on the roster, like Kris Dunn or Cameron Payne.

The next move for the Bulls is what they decide to do with Dwyane Wade. This move probably impacts that decision as well. He’s opted in to his contract, but the Bulls might buy him out.

Rondo will have some options as well in free agency, as he had a pretty good year with Chicago and found his form late in the season. He got injured in the playoffs, which probably ended the Bulls season a little earlier than they expected. Regardless, let’s see where Rondo ends up now.
