After wrestling to a 60-minute draw with Kenny Omega at NJPW Dominion in one of the best matches ever, Kazuchika Okada has a new challenger at the G1 Special in July for NJPW: Cody. Despite the brand coming to America, here’s five reasons why Cody shouldn’t win his IWGP Heavyweight Championship match against Okada.

I’ll give Cody credit. He’s got some serious guts.

After Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega wrestled to a 60-minute draw in the main event of of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Dominion pay-per-view, the former WWE Intercontinental Champion challenged the IWGP Heavyweight Champion to a match for the gold at the G1 Special for NJPW in California at the beginning of July.

Okada and Omega have wrestled not only two of the best matches in 2017, they’ve wrestled two of the best matches in the history of professional wrestling. The sequel to their six-star classic at Wrestle Kingdom 11 this past January was just as good, if not better than the first encounter.

But, with the brand coming to America next month, along with a couple Americans getting two prominent roles on the two-day special, could it be Cody’s time to dethrone the best NJPW has had to offer in recent times?

(This isn’t even factoring in that NJPW will crown their first United States Champion during the two-day special in Long Beach, too.)

It could be Cody’s night on July 1, but then again, it shouldn’t.

Why not? Here’s five reasons why Cody shouldn’t defeat Okada and win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at the G1 Special.

Reason No. 1: What has Cody done in NJPW?

This is no slight at Cody because he’s a fantastic star that WWE had absolutely no clue how to utilize. (I mean, how do you not know how to use a Rhodes in wrestling?)

Cody has looked awesome during his matches with NJPW and during his time in Ring of Honor as a Bullet Club member. He’s definitely getting chances and exposure that he wouldn’t have gotten in WWE.

The thing is, what has Cody done with New Japan? Sure, ROH and NJPW have a partnership that’s utilized often, but he’s wrestled three matches in NJPW. Is the plan really to give a guy that’s wrestled just three matches for their company the top title?

The challenge from Cody makes sense in terms of Okada. He came incredibly close to throwing the towel in for Omega at Dominion because of the shape Omega was in, but the remaining members of Bullet Club made sure that didn’t happen.

Still, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to end an awesome run from Okada just because they’re on American soil and an American (who has wrestled three matches for the company in 2017) is challenging for the company’s biggest title.
