Magic Johnson claims that LaVar Ball is another dude off camera.

Magic Johnson had the misfortune of watching the Los Angeles Lakers from the outside for the last few years, and it wasn’t a pretty sight to see. But Jeanie Buss changed that this season, and now Johnson has almost full control of the franchise. He has done a lot of good already, but the best thing to happen yet was the Lakers drafting Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick in this summer’s NBA draft.

Ball is a phenomenal passer, and his shooting will improve in time. Some have compared the young point guard to Jason Kidd, but don’t be surprised if Magic sees a bit of himself in Ball.

The main question mark about Lonzo has nothing to do with his actual game. His father is one of the most outspoken dads we have seen since Earl Woods and Richard Williams, but it should be noted that both of those fathers produced some of the best athletes of all time. LaVar Ball has claimed that he could beat Michael Jordan one-on-one, and that his son is better than Stephen Curry. LaVar has also said that Lonzo will lead the Lakers to the playoffs next season. That is one prediction fans in Los Angeles might actually believe in. Magic had something interesting to say recently about LaVar that should soothe the nerves of fans in L.A.

“LaVar impressed me [cause] with the cameras off, he was just being dad,” Johnson said to Spectrum SportsNet. “He was just a proud father of three incredible sons and a great husband, and I said ‘I see what it is now.'”

No one knows yet how Lonzo will fare in the NBA, but it should be an entertaining journey no matter which way it goes. I wouldn’t expect LaVar to stay out of the spotlight anytime soon, especially with two more sons going to UCLA in the future. But Magic better hope that the Ball family performs as well on camera as they do off of it.
