Orioles Get
RHP Jeremy Hellickson
cash
Phillies Get
LHP Alex Wells

Why the Orioles should do it: The Orioles are hanging around in the American League East division race and the Wild Card race. Their issue is starting pitching. It’s Dylan Bundy and not much else behind him. Kevin Gausman has an ERA over 6.00. Ubaldo Jimenez has an ERA over 7.00 and Chris Tillman has an ERA over 8.00. Not exactly Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz out there. They do not have a ton of prospects but need to make a move for a starter.

As said previously, the Phillies aren’t going anywhere and Hellickson’s contract is expiring. Therefore, this is an obvious fit for the Orioles because of the lack of commitment to Hellickson. He’s pricey for this year at $17 million, however, that’s where the cash gets kicked in and the Orioles have to give something a little extra in terms of prospects while not sacrificing a top prospect or two out of what is a very limited farm system.

Why the Phillies should do it: Cash in those veteran trade assets. Hellickson isn’t a part of the next great Phillies team and probably won’t be there next year. Get yourself a prospect, this time in terms of Wells. He’s not a hard-throwing lefty, but crafty lefties can be very effective, just ask Jamie Moyer who did it for years.  It’s another arm for a system that could use a few more for a team that has a ton of bats coming.
