Twins Get
LHP Clayton Richard
Padres Get
LHP Randy Rosario

Why the Twins should do it: If the Twins are going to keep doing what they are doing, they are going to need some starting pitching depth. Outside of Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios, they don’t have a heck of a lot because of injuries to pitchers like Phil Hughes and Hector Santiago that they were counting on. They aren’t the kind of team to trade top prospects for the sexy name on the trade market, in this case, someone like Jose Quintana or Sonny Gray.

Richard was signed for just over $1 million this year which is perfect for the Twins. He’s someone who’s pitched in pennant races before and in the AL Central. It’ll give the Twins a veteran presence towards the back end of their rotation.

Why The Padres should do it: It’s all about the future in San Diego. They signed a few veteran starting pitchers in hopes of getting some innings and then possibly flipping them before the trade deadline. Rosario has been working out of the bullpen in the minor leagues, but has a starting background and is on the 40-man roster.

The Padres have a few Rule V guys on their roster, so they could move Rosario back into a rotation in the minor leagues and stretch his arm back out. If not, they will have a hard throwing left-hander who can reach the upper 90’s out of the bullpen. Not a bad consolation prize for a team looking at depth all over the diamond.
