NBA Free Agency 2017: One signing every team should make
Brooklyn Nets: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
For whatever reason, there always seems to be a mid-level signing that everyone on the league gets on board with. There’s often not a whole lot of rhyme or reason to how it happens outside of fit and situation, but there just seems to be one guy who fits the best with a certain team that just so happens to have the money to land his services, so everyone is in agreement that it should (and most likely will) happen.
Heading into 2017 NBA free agency, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope going to the Brooklyn Nets fits that bill. After entering the league as the No. 8 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of Georgia, Caldwell-Pope will be a restricted free agent this summer. However, the Pistons just drafted Luke Kennard and aren’t exactly flush with cap room. Therefore, a team with the cap flexibility that the Nets have could come in with a godfather type of offer and force the Pistons to be unable to match. And if the Nets can land KCP and help him turn things around, that would be huge for them.
To this point, Caldwell-Pope has largely been disappointing. He’s struggled mightily with his efficiency on offense. The biggest issue with that, however, is the fact that his offense is the primary thing he brings to the table. Thus, he’s been lackluster and a letdown for the Pistons. But that’s not to say he doesn’t have the talent to succeed in a new situation. Putting him in the mix with new Net D’Angelo Russell and Caris LeVert, Brooklyn could have a young trio that’s both exciting and something to build around should they be able to land KCP.
