NBA Free Agency: Andre Iguodala meeting with Sacramento Kings
By John Buhler
After four years with the Golden State Warriors, small forward Andre Iguodala is looking for one last payday. Might it be with the Sacramento Kings?
Small forward Andre Iguodala has been the crucial sixth man for the juggernaut Golden State Warriors the last three years. After being the starter at the three for Golden State in 2013-14, he accepted a high-end reserve role with the team that allowed Draymond Green to enter the starting lineup.
Golden State has flourished the last three years, winning the 2015 and 2017 NBA Championships. While teammate Kevin Durant may renegotiate a new contract to allow for more cap space to re-sign Iguodala, among others, there is a good chance that Iguodala is too pricey for the Warriors going forward.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Iguodala will be meeting with two teams at the start of free agency not named the Warriors: the San Antonio Spurs and the Sacramento Kings.
Leaving Golden State for the Spurs would be a semi-wise move for Iguodala. He’d get to play for one of the best coaches of all time in Gregg Popovich on a championship-contending team. Playing with stars like Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge could be fun. So would not having any state income tax in Texas.
However, the Kings feel like a team that would mostly be a money grab for Iguodala at this stage of his career. If that’s what he wants, he should go for it. Then again, it is very much caveat emptor with going to the Kings. They are arguably the most dysfunctional franchise in the Western Conference.

That being said, Iguodala would have a great shot at starting in Sacramento should he sign there. The Kings’ former starting small forward, Rudy Gay, opted out of the final year of his contract to be an unrestricted free agent. Sacramento does have an interesting young core based around De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield. Don’t expect Iguodala to sign with the Kings, but we didn’t expect Iguodala to be this open to jumping ship from Oakland.
