NBA Free Agency rumors: Mavericks to pursue Kyle Lowry
The Mavericks may have drafted Dennis Smith Jr., but they’re still looking to add a point guard via free agency. The newest possibility is Kyle Lowry.
The Dallas Mavericks went into the NBA Draft looking for a point guard, after losing Deron Williams and playing with Yogi Ferrell down the stretch. They got lucky as Dennis Smith Jr. fell into their laps and they pulled the trigger on him.
Many thought the addition of Smith Jr. meant that the Mavericks wouldn’t be in the free-agent market for a point guard, but reportedly they are. According to HoopsHype’s Alex Kennedy, the Mavericks will be pursuing free-agent point guard Kyle Lowry.
Although one would think that the move for Lowry would inhibit the growth of a young point guard like Smith Jr., I would agree with Kennedy that it’s actually the opposite. Adding a veteran point guard like Lowry will only help Smith Jr. grow and become a better player.
Lowry has stated that he only wants to play for a championship contender, so it’ll be interesting to see if he takes the money from the Mavericks. Dallas has an aging roster and would be lucky to be in the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference.
Given the number of suitors that Lowry is going to have come July 1, I highly doubt he considers the Mavericks. The Timberwolves should be the front-runners, given that they just traded Ricky Rubio away and have a need for a point guard.

The Mavericks are always aggressive in free agency, from Harrison Barnes, DeAndre Jordan, Wes Matthews or Chandler Parsons. Chasing after Kyle Lowry definitely fits that persona and the attitude that Mark Cuban has.
They may not land Lowry, but they’re certainly going to pursue the free-agent point guard. Dennis Smith Jr. should be excited at the possibility of playing behind a veteran as good as Lowry.
