CLEVELAND, OH - JUNE 07: LeBron James

Steph Curry signed his five-year contract with the Golden State Warriors on Friday. LeBron James takes to Twitter to voice his support for Curry.

On Friday evening, late into the night, Stephen Curry was just about to agree to a five-year, $201 million contract with the Golden State Warriors. It’s the new “super-max” contract that players are eligible for when they make an All-NBA team.

LeBron James — Steph Curry’s rival, even if he denies it — took to Twitter to voice his support on Friday night. Many people wondered why LeBron would congratulate Curry on his new deal, when it only meant that James and the Cavaliers would keep seeing Golden State in the Finals.

Well, James is the Vice President of the NBA’s Player Association. He was a key figure in the last re-negotiation of the collective bargaining agreement. One of the key things that James wanted in the agreement was the option for the “super-max” contract. The first player to really take advantage of it was Curry.

Although they may be hated rivals on the court, LeBron continues to show that he cares about the players getting the biggest contract possible. Ann Killion, a reporter from the Bay Area, had this to say about the value Curry brings to the team.

James immediately took to Twitter to voice his thoughts on the types of contracts that NBA players should be receiving because they mean so much to the teams.

This is LeBron we’re talking about, so people are inevitably going to interpret the tweet in a lot of different ways. Maybe the King will never take a discount for a billionaire owner again. Perhaps he’s taking a shot at Dan Gilbert for not hiring a GM and making improvements to the team. Or he might just be happy his fellow players are getting paid.
