2017 will be the 131st playing of the Wimbledon Championships in London. Which players have won the most singles titles on grass over the years?

The Wimbledon Championships has been the most celebrated of the Grand Slams on the professional tennis circuit for some time now.

2017 will be the 131st time Wimbledon will be played in London. This Grand Slam is unique in that it gets back to tennis’ roots of playing on grass. Wimbledon is played out at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in the Wimbledon section of London.

With so many championships over the years, let’s take a look back to see which players have won the most career titles on grass in this grand slam event. Through the 2016 tennis season, two men are tied atop the leaderboard with seven career titles on grass: American Pete Sampras and Swiss Roger Federer.

Sampras won 14 career grand slams, seven at Wimbledon, five U.S. Opens and two Australian Opens. He won his first on grass back in 1993. Sampras would win in London six more times in 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Federer is still playing at a high level in the men’s circuit. Should he win on grass this July, he will pass Sampras with his eighth Wimbledon title. To date, Federer has won on grass in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012.

While Serena Williams dominates the women’s circuit today, she is still two titles away on grass from catching Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon. Navratilova won nine times on grass in the late 1970s and 1980s. She won it all in 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1990.

Though Williams will not play in this year’s tournament, can Federer take his No. 3 seed and win for the eighth time in London? With him sitting out the French open last month, look for Federer to be fresh and ready to go for potentially a record-setting tournament on grass.
