The Cleveland Cavaliers added another veteran to the mix at the beginning of free agency.
According to Priority Sports, a sports agency firm, Jose Calderon has agreed to terms on a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Chris Haynes of ESPN confirmed the news.
The Cavaliers have long been fans of using veterans with experience as backups behind All-Star Kyrie Irving. Last season, they used Deron Williams as a temporary platoon to give Irving some rest. With Williams exiting Cleveland, they decided to go for Calderon next.
The 35-year-old Spanish point guard has been floating around the league since the 2005-2006 season. He’s been a member of six different organizations since joining the NBA. Most recently, he finished the 2016-2017 season with the Atlanta Hawks after moving from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Calderon is known for his clever passing and vision, which are perfect traits for a backup point guard. The Cavaliers will have a ton of talent surrounding the veteran, so he will just need to show off his passing. With LeBron James, Kyle Korver and Kevin Love as his teammates, Calderon’s job will be a piece of cake in Cleveland.
Last season, Calderon became used to playing around 13 minutes per game. This will likely be his time spent on the court as a member of the Cavaliers, as well.
This deal came to fruition very quickly after the two parties were first connected through rumors earlier Saturday.

The Cavaliers have been a busy team in free agency, thus far. While unable to finish any deals before this signing, they are attempting to trade Iman Shumpert to the Houston Rockets. This trade would open cap space.
Calderon will be a great fit with the Cleveland Cavaliers as a passing wizard that teams will have to prepare for when Kyrie Irving is given some rest.
