The Saskatchewan Roughriders open Mosaic Stadium against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday, July 1.

On Saturday, the province of Saskatchewan will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada and the opening of new Mosaic Stadium. The football-crazed province will pack all of the 33,000 seats to see their beloved Roughriders face their Banjo Bowl rivals the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Riders opened the season with a 17-16 loss to the Montreal Alouettes after kicker Tyler Crapigna missed a game-winning 45-yard field goal. Offensively, Saskatchewan out-gained Montreal but two turnovers and the missed field goal were the difference. However, the Roughriders struggled to get into the end zone. The Riders only touchdown was controversial, as replay failed to overturn Bakari Grant’s touchdown. Grant clearly fumbled before crossing the goal line. Duron Carter was held to 12 yards receiving in the first game. Expect Kevin Glenn to target the explosive wide receiver more in the second game as the Riders look to put up more points.

Winnipeg opened the season with a bye week. After missing the playoffs in Mike O’Shea’s first two seasons as head coach, the Bombers turned it around last season. The Blue Bombers had the best turnover differential in the CFL last season and led the league in interceptions. After benching quarterback Drew Willy for Matt Nichols, the Blue Bombers finished the season 11-7.
