The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly meeting with free agent guard Dion Waiters tonight, according to Basketball Insiders.
Magic Johnson has been aggressively looking to make moves since he became the president of the Los Angeles Lakers. His latest ploy includes free agent guard Dion Waiters reportedly meeting with the Lakers.
Waiters reportedly had many suitors vying for him to join their respective rosters and is primed to receive a hefty payday. Playing for the Miami Heat last season, Waiters averaged 15.8 points, 4.3 assists and 1.8 3-pointers per game last season, including some clutch heroics in late game situations.
Although Waiters battled injuries last season and missed quite a bit of time, he showed enough potential to warrant significant attention. The Lakers are looking to add as much talent to their roster as they can for next season, to pair up with promising point guard Lonzo Ball. Waiters would give Los Angeles a solid threat from the perimeter, and allow them to compete next season as they gear up for a big 2019 free agency period.

Miami expressed their desire to re-sign Waiters, as he quickly became a fan favorite there, but didn’t want to overpay for him, which could inevitably lead him to join a new team. He also has ties to new Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka, who was Waiters’ agent before he assumed his new role.
It will be interesting to see if a deal can be struck between both sides tonight. The Heat are waiting on Gordon Hayward’s decision before they make their next move, but their former shooting guard may already be off the market by the time that decision comes to fruition.
