Twin Peaks took viewers on its most mind-bending trip yet. Will there be a new episode this week that will explain what just happened?

David Lynch’s work has never been for everyone, but if he’s used this Twin Peaks revival for anything, it’s been to distance himself even further from the mainstream. For all the crazy twists and turns the original series took, it proved it was at least accessible when it was able to garner up to 34 million viewers. But “The Return” has not only been a ratings bomb, it’s taken the supernatural elements of Twin Peaks and turned it up to 11.

The first three episodes, which contained extensive Black Lodge scenes, were very difficult to interpret. But it looked like, after a while, the show was about to start settling into a regular cop drama.

Then part 8 happened, which played out like an arthouse film. Dale Cooper’s doppelganger got shot then came back to life before the episode flashed back to 1945 to explain the origins of Bob and Laura Palmer — or so we think. The rest of the episode was filled with drug-induced sequences, and all in all, a rough total of 50 words were spoken.

Many people believe that David Lynch owes us some kind of explanation for deviating from the story like that. But they’ll have to wait at least another week for one since Twin Peaks is off. Half of that is probably due to it being Fourth of July weekend, while the other half is more of Lynch trolling us all.

TV Guide made the case of Twin Peaks being “anti-television” even before part 8, since it mostly consisted of unconnected scenes and musical performances “as though it were a particularly unsettling season of SNL.” But last week’s episode firmly set it apart from anything else on TV, for better or worse. It’s hard to watch the rest of this season now and think about what way it’s going to break the rules this time.
