The latest Twitter debate: How to pronounce Reese’s, as in Pieces and Peanut Butter Cups

Twitter is known as the home of silly debates, but this one seems especially ridiculous.

Okay Twitter, this time you may have gone too far. It’s a great forum for mass debate, but when it comes to Reese’s candy, there really shouldn’t be one.

See, as yours truly can assure you thanks to living about five minutes from the Hershey factory that helped put Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on the map, there’s definitely a correct way to pronounce the name of the candy brand. It’s named for H.B. Reese, a dairy farmer from about 100 years back.

That’s Reese, exactly how it looks. Add the apostrophe and the ‘s’ on the end and it should be pretty simple.

Except it never is when it comes to Twitter, because here’s what happened today:

That’s right. Not only can people not agree on how Reese’s should be pronounced, some even believe it’s pronounced differently when you are referring to Pieces or Peanut Butter Cups. Buzzfeed was so flustered it dropped the f-bomb in its article headline (which it later changed, but the four-letter word remains in the URL).

Adding fuel to the fire, the company itself was asked flat out a few months ago how to pronounce its name, and it stayed on brand in its Twitter response.

That’s sharp but not helpful. We’re not going to throw this out to the people like Buzzfeed, because people are often wrong or uninformed. So here it is: it’s REE-sis, not REE-sees, regardless of whether you’re eating Peanut Butter Cups or Pieces. And it’s never PEE-sees.

You’re welcome, Twitter.
