Which teams have won the previous editions of the Gold Cup?

The United States will host the 14th edition of the Gold Cup starting on July 7. Here’s which international teams have previously won the tournament.

The Gold Cup is the main CONCACAF tournament played every other year. Before its re-naming in 1991, the competition was simply called the CONCACAF Championship. Mexico and Costa Rica boast the most wins in that era with three apiece. Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Canada all won during that time period as well.

The United States hosted and won the first ever CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1991, beating Honduras on penalties to claim the trophy. Mexico, however, are the most successful side in the tournament’s history. They have won the competition seven different times since its inception.

El Tri defeated the U.S. twice and guest-team Brazil once over the next three years by a combined score of 6-0. That was the most dominant period by one squad in Gold Cup history.

The only other country to win the Gold Cup besides the United States and Mexico is Canada. In 2000, Canada defeated Columbia 2-0 to win the first Gold Cup in their history. The competition has largely been dominated by the U.S. and Mexico.

Over the next eight editions of the tournament, the U.S. and Mexico won four each. From 2002 to 2015, the two rivals have almost traded winning the competition. The U.S. won in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2013, while Mexico succeeded in 2003, 2009, 2011 and 2015.

The two countries met in the final three times in a row from 2007-2011, with Mexico winning two out of three.

Both the U.S. and Mexico are favorites to win the Gold Cup in 2017. It would not be surprising to see them face off in the final again. If the United States win, they would be just one win away from tying Mexico in all-time wins.
