Wimbledon 2017: Women’s results – Day 1
A look at the Wimbledon 2017 women’s results from Day 1 in London with Venus Williams, Madison Keys and more in action on Monday.
With no Serena Williams in the women’s field for Wimbledon 2017, the second grand slam of the year truly feels wide-open as play opened on Monday with Day 1, first-round action. However, someone has to step up in moments such as this, when the best player in the world isn’t on the court. Subsequently, getting off to a good start tournament.
There were a number of players who made sure that happened. Venus Williams was pushed a bit in both of them, but still won in straight-sets. She’ll look to continue that and take up the mantle with her sister not in the field. So too will another American in Madison Keys, the No. 17 seed at Wimbledon. She’s a dark horse, surely, but looked good in her first bit of action.
One of the favorites at Wimbledon 2017 actually isn’t a top-10 seed in the case of Petra Kvitova. However, the 11th seed looked the part of a favorite on Day 1. Additionally, Simona Halep was convincing in a straight-set win for the two-seed in London.

Again, there was nothing truly shocking that transpired on Day 1 for the women’s bracket. However, that could change in an instant given the feel and outlook of the second grand slam of the year. So while it was mostly chalk on Monday, don’t expect that trend to fully continue.
