It’s the 4th of July, which means it’s time for one of the most patriotic holidays. This will be full of the red, white, and blue colors to celebrate America. However, one tradition that’s become a staple of the 4th of July is the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, which takes place from Coney Island.
The Hot Dog Eating Contest has been a staple of Independence Day since the late 1960’s. It features competitors battling to eat as many hot dogs as they can, with the winner taking home the grand prize.
In the mid-2000’s, Takeru Kobayashi dominated this event. He won every competition from 2001 to 2006, setting world records and becoming one of the biggest names in professional eating.
However, by 2007, a man named Joey Chestnut usurped him. He became more dominant than Kobayashi, winning every event from 2007 to 2014. Each year saw him eat at least 54 hot dogs.
In 2015, Matt Stonie replaced Chestnut as the champion. He won by just two hot dogs (62-60) to become the first male to win that wasn’t Chestnut or Kobayashi since 2000.
By 2016, Chestnut reclaimed his throne as the champion, as he ate 70 hot dogs. He defeated Stonie by 18 to run away with the belt.
For the 2017 event, Chestnut will compete for his 10th victory. He’ll continue to cement himself as one of the greatest professional eaters of all time and make his mark on the Hot Dog Eating Contest.
