Roma center-back Antonio Rudiger is on his way to London after Chelsea agree to a £34.2 million fee.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have agreed on a fee for defender Antonio Rudiger. In what has been an extremely slow and worrisome start to the transfer window for the Blues, they finally seem to have brought in a key player to Stamford Bridge. They know that a big test lies ahead next season with Champions League and other domestic tournaments. Chelsea will need depth at all positions, not just for injuries and rotation, but internal competition as well. Rudiger fits the bill for both.

Chelsea’s back three of David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta over-performed this last season, and there is no guarantee they can repeat. With Andreas Christensen coming back from loan, and Rudiger now in the fold, there is competition for starting spots and defensive depth.

Rudiger may be able to challenge for a starting spot immediately, especially if Azpilicueta moves out to right wing back to join Victor Moses. If so, Rudiger may be able to beat out Christensen for the open spot.

It is no secret the Conte loves defenders from Serie A. He is the former manager of Juventus and Italian national team, so he has worked with many quality defenders during his time in Italy. Some fans may be pessimistic, but they should trust Conte if he rates Rudiger. If anyone knows what a defender needs to succeed, it is Conte.

Rudiger is a physical, bruiser of a center-back. His physicality will transfer well into the Premier League’s style of play. The German is also competent in the air, which Chelsea struggled with at times this year. Hopefully, while only 24, he will continue to improve as he hits his prime. Rudiger brings an edge and competitiveness that Chelsea and their fans will love.
