Where and when can you catch the premiere of the new FX series Snowfall?
Set in Los Angeles, FX’s newest drama Snowfall tells of the beginnings of the cocaine epidemic in the 1980s. Snowfall will follow the story of crack cocaine through the eyes of characters from all over the socio-ecoonomic spectrum. These are set to include a “street entrepreneur” (Damson Idris), a CIA operative (Carter Hudson) and the daughter of a so-called crime lord (Emily Rios).
The series has had a rather complicated journey to the screen. The pilot was originally ordered and shot over a year-and-a-half ago. However there was significant re-writing, re-casting and re-shooting before it was picked up to series.
Conceived by John Singleton, Dave Andron and Eric Amadio, Snowfall‘s first season will be 10 episodes in length. The three co-creators. also collaborated to write the pilot, which was directed by Adil el Arbi and Bilell Fallah.
Snowfall is a completely original series, so there are not really any guidelines for how the season will develop. Except for maybe history. A little bit. FX has consulted with Luis J. Rodriguez, a poet laureate who grew up in LA during the ’60s and ’70s, and was both a gang member and drug user at that time. Singleton also both grew up in the area (South Central LA) and has directed films set there in the past, including the critically acclaimed Boys N the Hood.
Early reviews for the premiere have praised it’s aesthetics and ambition, but criticized its pacing and a lack of focus. Some of this comes from the scale of the story it is trying to tell. As such, it should come together and become more intriguing as the show goes on.

The promo shows a series that paints with a fairly broad brush. Drugs in general, and cocaine in particular, are the main focus. But because it is about the birth of the crack epidemic, it will explore the larger world of Los Angeles at the time, including violence and the poverty that drives at least one of the main characters to begin dealing in the drug.
