By John Buhler
Day 3 of Wimbledon action is in the books. Here is a look at how it all shook out in the ladies’ singles tournament on Wednesday in London.
Roughly half of the Round of 64 of the ladies’ singles tournament at Wimbledon is in the books. While it was a breezy day in the men’s singles tournament, there were plenty of upsets for the ladies. Six ranked players fell on Wednesday in the 16 matches played on grass. However, none of the players that fell were ranked in the top 10 in the tournament.
No. 11 Petra Kvitova was the highest ranked player to lose at Wimbledon on Wednesday. She lost to Madison Brengle, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Other ranked players to fall include No. 15 Elena Vesnina, No. 17 Madison Keys and No. 18 Anastasija Sevastova.
However, if a player was ranked in the top 10 on Wednesday, they were in good shape. No. 2 Simona Halep advanced over Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. No. 4 Elina Svitolina had an easier time by knocking off Francesca Schiavone, 6-3, 6-0.
Venus Williams advances to the third round with a three-set win over Qiang Wang, 4-6, 6-4, 4-1. Williams was a little rattled in her first set, but prevail nonetheless. 2017 French Open champion No. 13 Jelena Ostapenko had her issues with Franchise Abanda on Wednesday, but reaches the next round after winning late at Wimbledon 4-6, 7(7)-6(4), 6-3.
