NBA Free Agency rumors: Spurs sign Rudy Gay to two-year deal

The San Antonio Spurs added a veteran forward Thursday as they hope to bring themselves back to the top of the Western Conference.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the San Antonio Spurs have agreed to a two-year deal with free agent forward Rudy Gay. The contract is worth a total of $17 million.

The Spurs weren’t exactly on the radar for Gay. The Utah Jazz were interested in the veteran because they missed out on Otto Porter. Additionally, Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday that Gay was favoring the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Gay entered the market by declining a $14 million option for next season with the Sacramento Kings. He is taking a pay cut to play with a competitive team.

His teams have never made deep playoff runs. He haunted the San Antonio Spurs as a member of those exciting Memphis Grizzlies teams years back, but has never broke through to a conference finals. The Spurs look poised to do so next season.

The Spurs finished with a 61-21 record last season, which gave them the second seed in a crowded Western Conference. They reached the Western Conference Finals in fairly routine fashion before falling 4-0 to the eventual NBA Finals winners.

The Spurs are losing very little this offseason, so this addition is only meant to improve the team, rather than fill a void.

Gay was off to a decent season in 2016 before succumbing to injury. He appeared in just 30 games, scoring 18.7 points per game. On top of that, he grabbed 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, as well.

The Spurs don’t really need a wing, at the moment. Gay will be playing substitute minutes off the bench behind Kawhi Leonard, most likely. This is a change of pace for the Connecticut product who is used to averaging more than 30 minutes per game.

He can give Leonard time off without losing too much quality.
