Wimbledon 2017: Women’s results – Round of 16
By John Buhler
The Round of 16 part of the Ladies’ Singles Tournament at Wimbledon is in the books. Let’s see who advanced to the quarterfinals to be played on Tuesday.
Wimbledon is starting to get very interesting in the Ladies’ Singles Tournament. We have seen the completion of the Round of 16 part and only eight players remain for Tuesday’s quarterfinals. Monday, July 10 saw three players get upset in the Round of 16, including No. 1 seed Angelique Kerber.
Kerber fell to No. 14 Garbine Muguruza in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. This is the second tournament that Kerber has failed to live up to the hype as the field’s No. 1 seed. At least she didn’t lose in the opening round like she did in the 2017 French Open.
No. 2 Simona Halep continues her brilliant year on the tennis court, as she cruised past Victoria Azarenka in two sets to reach the quarterfinals. The women that knocked her off in the French Open Finals in Jelena Ostapenko also advanced on Monday. She defeated No. 4 Elina Svitolina in two sets as the No. 13 seed. Ostapenko might be women’s tennis’ next shining star.
The last upset of the day saw American Coco Vandeweghe defeat No. 5 Caroline Wozniacki in two sets. Vandeweghe was the tournament’s No. 24 seed. She’ll be joined in the quarterfinals by fellow American Venus Williams, who advanced over No. 27 Ana Konjuh in two sets as the No. 10 seed.
