Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan to buy Marlins?
Two sports legends, Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan, reportedly are teaming up in attempt to buy the decidedly un-legendary Miami Marlins.
The last time Michael Jordan tried his hand at baseball, it didn’t go so well. This time, though, things could work out much better.
The NBA legend is a minority investor in a Derek Jeter-led group trying to buy the Miami Marlins from Jeffrey Loria, according to the New York Post.
Jeter’s group has bid $1.2 billion for financially strapped franchise and appears “to be closing in on a deal,” the newspaper reports. Loria has been asking for $1.3 billion for the Marlins.
The Jeter group has about 15 investors, including Jordan. His Airness “is said to be kicking in very little cash.”
Jordan has been the majority owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets since 2010. Before that, he served as president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards. While his track record as an executive is, uhh, somewhat mixed (the Kwame Brown pick in 2001 will haunt him to his grave), he does have the distinction of being the first former player to become the majority owner of an NBA team.
“Jeter sees Jordan as a role model in how to become a successful sports executive,” the Post reports.
Jeter’s group is not alone in pursuing the Fish.
Miami billionaire Jorge Mas is expected to bid about $1.17 billion, the Post reports.

And a third group, which includes former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, is still in the mix, now with the help of a Miami celebrity. The Miami Herald reports Armando Christian Peréz, better known as the rapper Pitbull, has joined the Bush camp.
The group is headed by New York-based Wayne Rothbaum, who brought in Bush after the former governor’s partnership with Jeter fizzled.
Before he became famous, Pitbull was a DJ for the Marlins. The Rothbaum/Bush group is hoping his presence will help the group promote its local ties.
