FanSided Fan of the Year gets bobblehead
Last year, we named Dave Edlund, also known as McCovey Cove Dave, as the 2016 FanSided Fan of the Year. Now, Edlund has a bobblehead to put on his mantle.
There are not too many fans who can say they have a bobblehead made of them in their honor. Dave Edlund is one of the proud few who can boast of that accomplishment. Edlund, who was given the honor of FanSided Fan of the Year in 2016, has a bobblehead which shows him in a kayak, depicting him in McCovey Cove at a San Francisco Giants game.
Edlund has been going to Giants games since he was a child in 1967, back in the days of Juan Marichal, Willie Mays and Willie McCovey at old Candlestick Park. Times have changed for both the team and Edlund, with San Francisco winning its first championship in 2010 since relocating from New York. The Giants won two more since in 2012 and 2014.
As for Edlund, he has gone from typical fan to one of the more recognizable fans in the game. At the time of winning the award last year, Edlund had caught 28 balls in the cove, a record that isn’t soon to be broken in the East Bay. For him, it’s anything but luck:
“I use statistics to figure out when the home runs are going to happen, Edlund said.” I use math as an advantage, the warmer the air temperature the more likely the home run, along with less wind. I go to most all the day games.
“All the regulars are friendly, but when a home run comes over, it’s every man for himself. It’s very competitive and I’m the most competitive. I go before the game and catch batting practice balls, and give those to the game. During the game, I’m focused. We treat it like a sport.”
If there was ever a fan who deserved a bobblehead, it’s Dave Edlund.
