4. Focus on the Long Term

The Rockies are enjoying a healthy roster leading up to the All-Star Break. They don’t have holes at any positions that aren’t filled with talented guys who have equally talented backup. With that in mind, the focus turns to looking ahead and building a team for the future every bit as much as supporting the current players.

The team has the luxury of sitting back to see who becomes available and by all accounts they will look for pitching support, using available position players are leverage. The Rockies have slipped to third place after a rough June, but they can get back on top of the NL West if they bolster their starting rotation and stop losing late in the game.

Colorado can look as close as the Padres for pitchers, because the Pads are hosting a fire sale and everyone is invited. Some of the names that come up would be Trevor Cahill, Jhoulys Chacin and possibly even Clayton Richard. Netting any one of those guys would be helpful to the Rockies’ rotation, providing some relief to the starters and experience to help win games. Richard aside, these guys aren’t aces, but they’re talented and can become valuable additions in the long term with the right guidance.
