Expendable Players

While the Rockies don’t need to deal anyone right now, they do have the option to move players like Carlos Gonzalez and Mark Reynolds if the right deal comes along now. Both Gonzalez and Reynolds are likely to leave after 2017, so why not move up the deal if it makes sense. The Rockies have Ramiel Tapia and Ryan McMahon available to fill their spots should Gonzalez and Reynolds leave.

Having players who can be dealt without impacting the roster is incredibly helpful. Gonzalez and Reynolds can step in and make immediate impacts on their new teams, which drives up their trade value for those teams dealing with injuries. Again, it all depends on who is available and how much the other teams are willing to offer to the Rockies to make the trade.

That kind of flexibility puts the Rockies in the driver’s seat when it comes to trade deals.
