With seven seeded players remaining among the eight playing, it seemed like it could’ve been a big day in London. However, for a tournament that has been themed by upsets, that trend largely continued in the quarters.
It began right off with the seventh seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova, going down in straight sets to Garbine Muguruza, the 14th seed. That was a wild way to get things started at the quarterfinals for the second grand slam, but Venus Williams (10) righted the ship. She took care of No. 13 seed Jelena Ostapenko in the next match, dispatching her in straight sets.
The next two quarterfinal matches then got underway, but the weather in London started to take its toll. Johanna Konta (6) and Simona Halep (2) began on Centre Court and were fine, but No. 24 Coco Vandeweghe and Magdalena Rybarikova was suspended for some time. Konta then finished here upset of the second seed at Wimbledon, then allowing Rybarikova to notch another upset for the day in toppling Vandeweghe.
With those four matches in the books on Tuesday, let’s take a look at the Wimbledon 2017 women’s quarterfinals results:
(14) Garbine Muguruza def. (7) Svetlana Kuznetsova – 6-3, 6-4
(10) Venus Williams def. (13) Jelena Ostapenko – 6-3, 7-5
(6) Johanna Konta def. (2) Simona Halep – 6-7, 7-6, 6-4
