NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 players that signed with the wrong team
2. Vince Carter to the Sacramento Kings
The Kings appear to be emerging from dysfunction, adding some veteran savvy to their mix of young players in free agency. George Hill and Zach Randolph were first in that movement, but Carter was eventually added on a one-year, $8 million deal.
Carter is obviously not the high-flying athlete and dunker he once was. But he was a useful player last season for the Memphis Grizzlies (8.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, 37.8 percent from beyond the arc over 24.6 minutes per game), at 40 years old.
Carter said he wants to play 1-2 more years, and he definitely looks like he can do so in a secondary role. So half of that time is now spoken for in Sacramento, on a team that finally got rid of DeMarcus Cousins before the trade deadline and is trying to rebuild the right way. Championship aspirations are not on the front burner for the Kings right now, but they surely are (or should be) for Carter as his career nears the end.
Sacramento was Carter’s only reported free agent visit, so he may have had to sign there if he simply wanted to keep playing. But I think he could have waited a bit longer, and probably gotten a little less money, to sign with a team that has a better chance to make the playoffs next season.
