Who’s been good and who’s been very bad at NBA Summer League?

The NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is a time for a hoop junkie to practically overdose on basketball. For some, the games are painful to watch as teams thrown together aren’t particularly cohesive, and most of these players are lacking (at least) one part of their game that is keeping them from being the NBA — athletes who can jump out of the gym but barely dribble, shooters lacking the athleticism to defend, speedy ball-handlers still needing a shot. Put them all together and you can end up with eyesores like the Bulls shooting 21.9 percent for an entire game.

But despite that, for some folks it’s Christmastime in July. A time to get a sneak preview of the recent top draft picks and to see how second year players are progressing (or in the case of some, regressing). A time to see a familiar face from a Final Four years ago trying to scrap his way into the league. And it’s also a time to offer snap judgements on how these prospects might be able to contribute in the coming NBA season.

On the newest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast (@fastbreakbreak), Trevor Magnotti (@illegalscreens) joins to talk about some of those prospects. Trevor covers the draft and the Euroleague at The Step Back, and along with myself falls squarely in the latter group of people who adore Summer League. How have top picks Lonzo Ball, De’Aaron Fox and Jayson Tatum adjusted to professional talent? Why are the Kings and Suns struggling so mightily despite having loads of lottery talent? Are Dennis Smith and Donovan Mitchell as good as they appear? And which players don’t belong there because they’re too good and which players don’t belong there because they look very bad?
