Snowfall may be the breakout hit of the summer so make sure you check out the second episode on Wednesday night and here’s how you can watch online.

In the first episode of Snowfall, we were introduced to the cast of characters, three groups who each seemed to inhabit their own story. The action did not really pick up until the final sequence of the episode, when Franklin Saint, who will probably end up being the focus character, finalized his first drug deal. It was clear that Franklin was as foreign to that world as most viewers. His uneasiness gave a mostly unfiltered look at that community.

In the second episode, titled ”

Make them Birds Fly” Franklin will learn more about how drug dealing actually works, and might not be too comfortable with it all. The show will also explore its other two story threads further. The synopsis from TV Guide reads:

"Franklin ajdusts to the reality of his niew enterprise; Teddy’s distrust of Alejandro escalates; and Gustavo confronts his new partners."

Based on the promo released by FX, episode 2 will bring the drug underworld into sharper focus. The world, as presented in Snowfall episode 1, was pretty sterile. The ugliness and consequences surrounding the drugs seemed to stay fairly confined to those who used them. In the second episode, the violence seems to come front and center. Franklin has to take a more central role in his new business which puts him closer to the line of fire. Whereas in the first episode he more or less stood back and let his friend, Aunt Louie, control the deal in the second episode he will run the show himself.

The promo also indicates there will be more focus on the government’s actions in Nicaragua. That is really too bad. While it would an interesting story on its own, the storyline involving the FBI/CIA broke the narrative cohesion and momentum that the other story’s had going, at least in the first episode.

Also, the characters involved were less relatable, but that may be the point. The people behind the show want to show how far-reaching the consequences of the crack epidemic were (and still are). But on the other hand, having the show so broadly focused can eliminate any emotional resonance it has.
