The U.S. Men’s National Team face Martinique Wednesday in each team’s second game of the Gold Cup. The United States got off to an odd start in their opening Gold Cup game. They drew against Panama 1-1, the first time they’ve ever opened up a Gold Cup with anything but a win. The game was an awkward one for both sides, and the U.S.’s relatively inexperienced (at the international level) team struggled to dominate as expected. The United States will expect better performances against the rest of Group B. Honduras may be the toughest opponent the United States face in the entirety of the group stage.

Martinique opened up their Gold Cup against Nicaragua with a 2-0 win. Both Martinique and Nicaragua had plenty of chances throughout the game, although Martinique ended up being the only side to take advantage of them. The shutout credit goes to goalkeeper Justo Lorente who made some incredible saves in keeping Nicaragua off the score sheet. This is just the third victory in five Gold Cup appearances for Martinique. If they’re able to muster a point against the United States, they’ll be taking a massive step towards potentially advancing to the knockout stage.
