NBA Rumors: Rajon Rondo had meeting with New Orleans Pelicans Thursday

Free-agent point guard Rajon Rondo reportedly had a meeting with the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday to discuss a possible one-year deal.

This summer has been especially crazy in the NBA as there were a flurry of signings and trades from the onset.  One of the best point guards still available is Rajon Rondo, but that might not be for much longer.

Rondo reportedly met with the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday to discuss possibly signing a one-year deal. The meeting reportedly went well and the two sides could begin contract discussions as early as Thursday.

Rondo signed a two-year deal with the Chicago Bulls last summer with the second year being a team option with a $3 million buyout. Rondo had a rough first season in Chicago and found himself on the bench during one stretch of the regular season.

He finished the season averaging 7.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He only averaged 27 minutes per game, which was his lowest average since his rookie season.

The Bulls found a way to make the playoffs as the eighth seed and were up 2-0 against the Boston Celtics in the first round. Rondo played very well in the first two games, but was then lost for the remainder of the series with a thumb injury. With Rondo sidelined, the Bulls lost four straight.

The Bulls traded forward Jimmy Butler the night of the NBA Draft, paving the way for a rebuild that included declining their team option on Rondo.

If Rondo were to sign with the Pelicans, he would be rejoining former teammate DeMarcus Cousins as the two played together with the Sacramento Kings. The Pelicans already brought back point guard Jrue Holiday this summer, but he could move to shooting guard if Rondo is added.

The free-agent market has started to dry up, but the Pelicans are hoping the possible addition of Rondo can get them back into the playoffs for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
