15. UT in Citrus

When he retired from coaching toward the end of the 2015 college football season, the game lost a legend on the sidelines and in press conference room. Yes, the head ball coach Steve Spurrier was something else. He is the best head coach in two SEC schools’ history in his alma mater Florida Gators and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Spurrier dominated football seasons in the 1990s while at Florida, turned South Carolina into a top-10 program in this past decade. All the while, he was dominating talking season. Spurrier loved to rib two programs in particular as the head ball coach: the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers.

While Georgia’s disdain was obvious given that Florida and South Carolina view the Bulldogs as a major SEC East rival, the Tennessee hate was a tad more personal for Spurrier. The Johnson City native wasn’t recruited to play for his home state’s Volunteers out of high school. So he beat the snot out of them most of the time in SEC play at Florida.

In one of his best press conferences to date, Spurrier poked fun at Phillip Fulmer and Peyton Manning for their love of going to the Citrus Bowl. At the time, the No. 2 SEC team would play in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, while the No. 1 team would play in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Spurrier won six SEC Championships at Florida, so he went to a ton of Sugar Bowls and “you can’t spell Citrus without UT”.

This movie would be about the football rivalry between Florida and Tennessee in the 1990s and how the head ball coach and Peyton Manning were the two men who have made it one of the best early season games played annually in the SEC. Nobody loved winning talking season quite like the Head Ball Coach.
