NBA Free Agency: Jonathon Simmons inks three-year deal with Orlando Magic

Former San Antonio Spurs shooting guard Jonathon Simmons has reportedly signed a three-year deal to play for the Orlando Magic.

2017 NBA free agency has reached a crawl as it should two weeks into the process. However, there are still a handful of high-end rotation players still on the market. One guy that no longer fits that billing is former San Antonio Spurs shooting guard Jonathan Simmons.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, “Free agent Jonathan Simmons has agreed to a three-year deal with the Orlando Magic.” Simmons’ agent Cervando Tejada broke the news to ESPN.

Simmons had spent his last two seasons playing for the Spurs, primarily coming off the bench. He averaged 6.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in two years with San Antonio. Simmons even started some games in the 2017 Western Conference Playoffs after Kawhi Leonard went down with an injury in the conference finals.

This is an interesting move for both teams involved. The Spurs think that they can recreate Simmons through their own basketball culture. He was 27 years old and not really ever going to start regularly for a 50-win team in San Antonio. Skipping town was probably in his best interest for continuing his growth as a professional.

As for the Magic, this might be the nail in the coffin for the Mario Hezonja experiment in Central Florida. He came into the league with great upside as a rookie, but has struggled to live up to the hype of being a former No. 5 overall pick.

Keep in mind that the Magic are now run by former Milwaukee Bucks general manager Scott Hammond. He will continue to make smart, under-the-radar changes to the Magic to have them better positioned to compete long-term. Simmons comes from a winning culture in San Antonio. Expect him to play a major rotational role with the club out on the wing in 2017-18.
