The U.S. men’s national team face Nicaragua Saturday in each team’s third game of the Gold Cup. The United States are in an odd situation after two lackluster performances against Panama and Martinique. The two performances resulted in four points, however, and the United States are in the driver’s seat to win the group. Two of the three goals they’ve given up thus far could have been stopped had there been better defending. Aside from the deflection on the second goal for Martinique, the U.S.’s defending has been sub par at best.

Nicaragua have lost both of their games in the Gold Cup so far. They were shut out by Martinique in their opening game, 2-0. Their game against Panama wasn’t much better, as they lost 2-1. The only goal the Nicaraguan’s have mustered thus far was a thunderous strike in the opening moments of the second half from Carlos Chavarria. It was the first goal for the Nicaraguan’s in the Gold Cup, and could be a catalyst for more to come. Their defensive gaps are highlighted by an even greater weakness on the offensive end. Nicaragua’s ability to recover from bad defensive mistakes is much more difficult because of their inability to score.
