Garbine Muguruza has won the 2017 Ladies’ Single championship at Wimbledon over Venus Williams. Here is how the final match went down on Saturday morning.

We have a winner at Wimbledon. The 2017 Ladies’ Singles tournament goes to Spain’s Garbine Muguruza. She defeated American Venus Williams in two sets, 7-5, 6-0. This is Muguruza’s second career Grand Slam. She had previously won the 2016 French Open. This was her second trip to the Wimbledon finals in her young career.

It was a very tight first set between No. 14 Muguruza and No. 10 Williams. With the roof closed at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, it had an ominous feel in the women’s singles finals. After a slow start, things started to pick up late in first set, as Muguruza was able to take it over Williams 7-5.

From there, things started to turn south for Williams, as she was swept in the final set 6-0 by Muguruza. Williams had difficulty placing her ball strategically to even win a game on Muguruza in the second set. It would have been a storybook match for Williams to win with all she has gone through of late, but women’s tennis may have found its next star in Muguruza.

She’s only 23 years old and the Williams sisters are well into their 30s. This is the second Grand Slam of Muguruza’s career, as she has proven to be an adept player on both clay and grass. If she can figure out how to win on a hardcourt in the U.S. and Australian Opens, she could very well end up being able to complete the Grand Slam before we know it.

Congratulations to Muguruza. She was clearly the better player at Wimbledon on Saturday morning in London. It’ll be interesting to see how she and Williams will do at Arthur Ashe in a few weeks at the U.S. Open.
