Roger Federer defeats Marin Cilic to win the Gentlemen’s Singles final at 2017 Wimbledon. Here is how the final match played out on Sunday in London.

It wasn’t particularly close. No. 3 Roger Federer was simply too much for No. 7 Marin Cilic in the Gentlemen’s Singles finals at 2017 Wimbledon. Cilic was dealing with a foot injury throughout the match and that got in the way of him being able to capture his first Grand Slam on grass.

The problem with that is nobody dominates on grass in men’s professional tennis quite like Federer. After winning three straight sets, Federer has won his unbelievable eighth Grand Slam at Wimbledon and his 19th overall in his impressive tennis career.

This was his second Grand Slam this tennis season. Federer won the 2017 Australian Open at the start of the year, but sat out the 2017 French Open over concerns of playing on clay. Federer is still an elite player, but is clearly on the back-nine of his tennis playing prime.

The interesting wrinkle to his 2017 Wimbledon experience is that he didn’t have to play any of his rivals to win it all on grass. Cilic was able to get past No. 16 Gilles Muller earlier in the quarterfinals and the 24th-seeded Sam Querrey in the semis. Muller was one of the Cinderella stories in the tourney, beating Rafael Nadal in an instant classic.

So here we are seeing Federer on the highest stage in professional tennis in London once again. He’s not going to keep doing this forever, but 2017 has been great to him and his game thus far. If he somehow wins at Arthur Ashe in August, what a year it would be for Federer.

Let’s not overlook the great tournament by Cilic. He simply ran out of gas against Federer in the final. While it was cool to see Federer win another Grand Slam, we were all wishing he would be challenged in London, but sadly was not.
