One big question for every NBA team
Will Miami trade Tyler Johnson?
The Heat locked into last year’s roster and added Kelly Olynyk after striking out on Gordon Hayward. Their moves make sense for the most part. They kept together a team that surpassed expectations and put together a wild, fun season. They should be a solid team in the Eastern Conference at the very least. Signing James Johnson to a four year contract could look ugly within a few seasons, but Miami did a nice job.
After re-signing Waiters long-term, the Heat have an army of shooting guards and a lot of cash committed to guys at that position. With the salary of Tyler Johnson ballooning to just over $19 million after next season (he was an Arenas Provision guy) and a potential extension for Josh Richardson on the way, the Heat are going to be facing tax issues soon. With a rotational overlap and financial issues on the way, Johnson could be the odd man out. He’s a solid player that could generate some interest around the league, despite the fact that he’ll make about $40 million in the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
If Miami is serious about dealing Johnson, they should probably do so this season. Finding a trade partner for Johnson will be a bit easier now when he is making a little more than $5 million.
