British Open 2017: Breakdown of the prize money
By John Buhler
The 2017 British Open will begin on Thursday, July 20 at Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, England. Here is a breakdown of all the prize money.
As it’s starting to get pretty hot stateside, let’s turn our attention overseas to the Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, England. Beginning on Thursday morning, the 2017 British Open will be under way. This will be the 146th playing of The Open Championship. Who is going to win the iconic Claret Jug this year? Does Henrik Stenson repeat as The Open Champion?
One interesting note about The Open Championship this year is that it will be the first that will be paid out in U.S. currency. While the British pound had been the obvious choice of currency for years, apparently this switch of currency has a ton do with last summer’s Brexit, where the United Kingdom opted to leave the European Union.
Even with the switch of currency, there will be a spike in the amount of money the 2017 Open Champion will win this year when compared to what Stenson pocketed last July. He made close to $1.53 million with his 2016 championship.

This year’s winner stands to make $1.845 million along with hoisting the Claret Jug. The runner-up will pocket over $1 million as well, as he’ll take home $1.067 million. A top-four finish will guarantee a purse of over $500,000. Finishing in the top 21 will land a player six figures.

Overall, the participants in the 2017 British Open look to be well compensated. Though the purses won’t match what The Masters Tournament or The U.S. Open can offer, it’s a good bit of coin a player can take home with a good showing this weekend at Royal Birkdale Golf Course.
