Where is the 2017 British Open Championship?
As the location changes every year, we take a look at where the 2017 British Open will be played and a bit of information about the course
It’s been a month since the last major championship on the PGA Tour, and now it’s time to head to the United Kingdom. The 2017 British Open is ready to roll with the biggest names in golf ready to take aim. However, they may have a more difficult time taking aim than they normally would given where they’ll be playing.
The 146th Open Championship will be played at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in North West England, specifically Southport, Merseyside. This is far from the first time that the British Open has been played here in its near century-and-a-half long run. In fact, this will be the 10th time that Royal Birkdale has played host to the third major of the season.
Back in 2008 was the last time that the British Open was played at Royal Birkdale. That tournament was won by Padraig Harrington. Perhaps most telling about the course and conditions in this part of England is that his winning score was just 3-over par. Though the world’s best such as Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and so on will all be playing, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see an over-par score take the Claret Jug again.
What’s wild about the high scores that Royal Birkdale forces golfers to put up is it’s only a par-70 course. With that being said, the deep hazards, windy conditions and numerous other challenges presented by the course make even-par ultimately a great score to post.

The British Open is always terrific fun for those exact reasons. You can have golfers at the top of their game come in and just get eaten alive. At the same time, others can persevere through the adversity presented by the course and be rewarded for it. So get ready for the first round on July 20.
