MLB trade rumors: Yankees want Yonder Alonso
By John McCarty
The New York Yankees are hope to acquire Oakland A’s first baseman Yonder Alonso at the trade deadline for their postseason push.
Last year, the New York Yankees were sellers come the trade deadline. Shipping off relief arms Andrew Miller to Cleveland, Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs and outfielder Carlos Beltran to the Texas Rangers, New York has a farm system flush with solid prospects. As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees are exploring using some of those assets to add and address a need position, first base. And the name they have their eye on is Oakland’s Yonder Alonso.
The Yankees could use help at first base. Entering the 2017 season, the expectation was that youngster Greg Bird would hold down that spot, but injuries have derailed his season. With an expiring contract, the lefty slugger could be an ideal fit in the Yankee lineup, possibly fitting between right-handed hitters Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez.
Another aspect that could be interesting with the Yankees is the recent loss of right-handed starter Michael Pineda. The A’s are making Sonny Gray, a right-handed starter available as well as Alonso. The Yankees have been said to be exploring Gray as well as Alonso. Gray would go a long way in aiding the Yankees pitching rotation as they contend with both Boston and Tampa in the American League East.

If the Yankees are unable to make a move with Alonso, the Atlanta Braves could be a fit with Matt Adams. Acquired after Freddie Freeman went down with an injury, Adams is also a power left-handed bat. Also, Atlanta may be interested in moving their starting pitcher, right handed Julio Teheran.
Regardless, it certainly appears there are options for the Yankees should they decide they need to address first base and make a move to add. They certainly have the pieces to do so.
