Bears sign Mitchell Trubisky

The Chicago Bears have reportedly agreed to terms with No. 2 overall pick quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Chicago rookies opening training camp on Wednesday.

It may not be the best of years for the 2017 Chicago Bears, but at least they won’t have their first-round pick holding out like Joey Bosa did for the 2016 San Diego Chargers. On Wednesday, Bears’ No. 2 overall pick Mitchell Trubisky has reportedly agreed to his rookie contract with the club.

Wednesday is the first day Bears rookies are scheduled to report to training camp at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The veterans will join them next Wednesday at training camp. Having Trubisky signed and ready to get to work from day one of camp is huge for his development and the Bears’ long-term future.

Keep in mind Chicago traded up from No. 3 to No. 2 to draft Trubisky out of the University of North at Chapel Hill. He was a standout for the North Carolina Tar Heels in his lone year as a starter for the team in 2016. Trubisky projects to be a middle-level franchise quarterback. If he’s at least an Andy Dalton of signal caller, then it was worth trading up to draft Trubisky at No. 2.

Chicago will likely be one of the worst teams in football. However, that does not mean Trubisky is expected to start Week 1 at home against the Atlanta Falcons. He will have to battle veterans Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez for reps in the Bears quarterback room.

Glennon was paid handsomely by general manager Ryan Pace in free agency. Sanchez is a former No. 5 overall pick. While his career has been derailed by inconsistency, Sanchez did quarterback the New York Jets to a pair of AFC championships.

Trubisky is definitely the future of the Bears franchise, but could be the present before know it. If Chicago falls out of the playoff race early, look for Trubisky to get all the reps going forward. Good by him and the Bears to come to a contract agreement before the start of fall camp.
