Chicago White Sox call up top prospect Yoan Moncada

After the White Sox completed a seven-player blockbuster trade with the Yankees, they are calling up their top prospect.

In what seemed to be inevitable before the season started, the Chicago White Sox began trading away pieces to build toward their future. They kicked things off by trading their ace, Jose Quintana, to the Chicago Cubs, and followed it up by agreeing to a mega deal with the Yankees earlier Tuesday evening.

One of the main pieces dealt was Chicago’s third baseman, Todd Frazier, which left the team with an immediate opening at the hot corner. The position was filled in short order, as the White Sox called up their top prospect Yoan Moncada to fill that void. Moncada has played exclusively at second base in the minors, but he has plenty of experience at third base as well. It will be interesting to see where the team slots him.

At last, MLB’s top prospect will make his long-awaited debut in the big leagues, in what probably felt like forever for White Sox fans. Moncada has put up great numbers at AAA this season, hitting for a .282 average with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. The dynamic infielder looked primed to get called up long ago, but the White Sox understandably took their time with their prized prospect until a full-time opening became available for him.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn commented on the move after it was announced, by mentioning how the organization felt it was finally the time for Moncada to take the next step in his career development.

Moncada was acquired last summer in the blockbuster trade that sent Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox. It’s certainly an exciting time for not only White Sox fans, but baseball fans all around.
