NBA Free Agency: New Orleans Pelicans sign Rajon Rondo

The New Orleans Pelicans added a veteran to their roster Thursday.

According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, the New Orleans Pelicans signed experienced point guard Rajon Rondo. The deal is for one season and is worth $3.3 million.

Rondo will work as both a mentor and talented bench player to give Jrue Holiday time to rest. He can help develop young point guards Quinn Cook and Frank Jackson while still performing admirably.

Holiday signed a five-year, $126 million contract to open free agency.

As long as he can avoid injury, the former Kentucky standout has proven he can still perform. Rondo, 31, has a great all-around game that will work wonders with DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis. He can set them up for easy opportunities, as Rondo is known for his stellar passing. Since entering the NBA in 2006, he has averaged 8.5 assists per game along with 10.7 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Additionally, he will come into the roster with the most playoff experience of any player on the roster. In fact, Quincy Pondexter, the back up small forward, is the only player to have even made it out of the regular season.

Meanwhile, Rondo has had extensive playoff experience. He was a huge part of the successful Boston Celtics teams of the past decade, acting as a catalyst for Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce during his time there, so he definitely knows how to distribute to great players.

The Pelicans had a disappointing season after making a blockbuster move to acquire Cousins from the Sacramento Kings. They finished 10th in the Western Conference, seven games away from a playoff berth.

The Pelicans will need all the help they can get if they want to slip their way into the playoffs in the crowded Western Conference next season. Rondo could be a major component of their success in 2017-2018.
