MLB Trade Deadline Rumors: 5 trades Red Sox should make
3. Trade for Eduardo Nunez
Now that Todd Frazier is off the board, the third base options in the trade market are relatively slim. However, the Giants struck gold this time last year after acquiring versatile Eduardo Nunez from the Twins. And, with San Francisco well out of playoff contention, and Nunez scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, the club would likely be willing to flip the 30-year-old speedster to another team in need.
Nunez hit .296/.327/.418 with four home runs, 20 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 50 games for the Giants down the stretch last year, and when combined with the All-Star numbers he posted in Minnesota, Nunez finished with a .288/.325/.432 slash, 16 homers, 67 RBI and 40 stolen bases. He also scored 73 runs hitting all over the lineup and playing third base, shortstop and second.
Nunez began the season as the everyday third baseman in San Francisco, and has hit .295/.319/.407 with four homers, 26 RBI, 35 runs scored and 17 steals in 69 games. A strained left hamstring cost Nunez nearly a month on the disabled list, though he has hit safely in four of his five games since returning to the lineup Tuesday. He has also been called into action in left field for 19 games, shortstop for 10 and right field twice.
The Giants also have a few bullpen options capable of helping the Red Sox as part of any deal including Nunez. George Kontos, Cory Gearrin and Hunter Strickland have all put up solid numbers in middle relief for the club this season, and Sam Dyson (acquired from the Rangers early this year) has bounced back from a disastrous start to post a 2.93 ERA with four saves in 14 appearances.
