British Open 2017: Jordan Spieth updated leaderboard after Round 1
By John Buhler
American golfer Jordan Spieth had a great first day at the 2017 British Open. Here is how he did among his peers in Day 1 at The Open Championship.
After Round 1 of the 2017 British Open, American golfer Jordan Spieth is in a great position to win his this golf major. Okay, we might have to pump the breaks a bit since he’s only played 18 holes at Royal Birkdaly, but he is in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard.
Spieth and fellow Americans Brooks Koepka and Matt Kuchar all shot a 65 to finish Round 1 at five under par. Koepka won the 2017 U.S. Open in Erin Hills, and Kuchar is still looking for his first major in 17 years on tour, but Spieth was the talk of Round 1 of The Open Championship.
Spieth made five birdies on the afternoon and didn’t bogey a hole. He birdied holes No. 2, 8, 9, 14 and 17 during his marvelous first round at Royal Birkdale. While a -5 on the day was terrific, he does have a handful of golfers nipping at his heels through Day 1.
Paul Casey and Charl Schwartzel are only a stroke back of Spieth, Koepka and Kuchar through 18 holes. Six golfers are just two strokes back of the leading trio at three under. Those guys are Ian Poulter, Justin Thomas, Richard Bland, Austin Connelly, Charley Hoffman and Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
Here is what the top of the British Open leaderboard looks like after Round 1.
- T1: Jordan Spieth (-5)
- T1: Brooks Koepka (-5)
- T1: Matt Kuchar (-5)
- T4: Paul Casey (-4)

Kuchar may have made five birdies on the front nine in his opening round. Koepka did sink three birdies in a row at one point. However, Spieth looks to have had the most consistent first round of the tournament. Can he keep it up through three more days of British Open action?
