Hugh Freeze is out as head football coach at the University of Mississippi. Why did the former Ole Miss Rebels coach abruptly resign on July 20?

Things have gone from horrible to downright embarrassing for the Ole Miss Rebels football program. After being placed on sanctions this offseason for reckless recruiting violations and not being eligible to play in a bowl game in 2017, former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze has abruptly resigned from his post amidst allegations.

Freeze had been the head coach of Ole Miss since 2012. He had gone 39-25 (19-21) in five years on the job. While Ole Miss achieved good success on the football field, it was all but on power, corruption and lies. The Rebels are challenging the Baylor Bears for the race to be the Power 5’s most despicable football program.

So why did Freeze resign on Thursday evening? Apparently this has to be with a certain one-minute phone call he had on January 19, 2016. It is reported that Freeze placed a phone call to a Detroit area code (313) that is associated with a female escort service out of Tampa. The phone number has since been disconnected.

This phone call was brought to attention in the ongoing lawsuit former Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt is in with the university for supposedly violating the terms of his 2011 dismissal. Nutt has obvious bad blood with Freeze and Ole Miss athletic director in recent years stemming from his firing.

Frankly, Ole Miss football is out of the frying pan and into the fire. It has gone from horrible to nightmarish in a matter of months. While Ole Miss was doing seedy things in terms of recruitment under Freeze, the Rebels failed to make a bowl game in 2016.
