Oregon football 2017: Projected Ducks depth chart
Offense
Notable Losses: As mentioned, dismissing Darren Carrington is going to leave a noticeable impact on the field. While it was the right call, it’s going to take some time to adjust this close to the season. The Ducks lost Pharaoh Brown and the tight end room. Having to replace it with young players will take time. Also, backup quarterback Travis Jonsen leaving the program leaves little room for error.
QB: Justin Herbert, Sophomore
Entering just his sophomore season, Justin Herbert has a lot on his plate entering the year. He has to prove that he is the guy at quarterback with Braxton Burmeister waiting in the wings and he has to work with a lot of new faces. He’s in a tough spot and with a new head coach, it’s going to take some development and time.
RB: Royce Freeman, Senior
This is the one position where the Ducks are going to have no issue making big things happen. Freeman and the rest of the group of running backs all have home run ability and will be leaned on heavily to take games over on offense.
WR: Charles Nelson, Senior
WR: Dillon Mitchell, Sophomore
WR: Alex Ofodile, RS Sophomore
This is where the loss of Carrington is going to hurt. No longer will they have their big-play threat that they have relied on for so long. Fortunately, senior Charles Nelson is no stranger and can help younger receivers like Dillon Mitchell and Alex Ofodile get up to speed in a bigger role. The quicker they can find a connection with Herbert, the better.
TE: Jacob Breeland, RS Sophomore
This is perhaps where the Ducks suffered their biggest losses of any position on offense. After losing three capable tight ends, Oregon will now turn to Jacob Breeland. The depth chart is really thin here and is a recruiting area that Taggart will focus on heavily leading into 2018.
LT: Tyrell Crosby, Senior
LG: Shane Lemieux, RS Sophomore
C: Jake Hanson, RS Sophomore
RG: Jake Pisarcik, RS Senior
RT: Calvin Throckmorton, RS Sophomore
With a young quarterback, a receiving core in transition and a tight end group that’s practically new, the offensive line has to be the rock for this offense. They all have plenty of experience and have really been a strong unit together. Crosby will give Herbert all the time he needs to make plays.
