John Wall signs four-year extension with Washington Wizards

John Wall has agreed to sign a four-year extension with the Washington Wizards. The fourth year of the deal is a player option.

The trio of John Wall, Bradley Beal, and Otto Porter looks like it’s going to be the core for the Wizards for quite some time.

John Wall becomes the latest max player as he has agreed to sign the designated veteran player exception worth $207 million. His contract mirrors the framework of James Harden, who was named the highest paid player in NBA history.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has also since reported that the deal includes a 15 percent trade kicker. The deal will realistically be four years worth $170 million. The new extension will occur in 2019 following the conclusion of his incumbent contract. Wall is currently on a max deal that was signed in 2013. With the cap spike in the NBA, Wall will be receiving a hefty pay raise.

Good news for Wall is that he signed the designated player exception which doesn’t matter in regard to making the All-NBA first team. Wall would have missed out on millions for not making All-NBA previously but used the designation loop hole in the CBA. Wall joins only Steph Curry and James Harden as $200 million players in the NBA.

Wall, 26, averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists per game a year ago. The Wizards, however, may have hit their ceiling with this team after being ousted in the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the Celtics. With Otto Porter locked up in a new max deal, the Wizards are stuck with this roster for the long haul. Porter also received a trade kicker making potential deals for either player extremely unlikely. The Wizards are projected to be a luxury tax team with a projected payroll of $126 million.
